The Power of Family: Vega/Banos Land Acquisitions

News Five continues its perusal of one hundred and eighteen land documents leaked recently that show a land scheme which enriched friends and families of former Deputy Prime Minister Gaspar Vega.  We took you through the switching scheme employed by the Vega family of western Cayo District, relatives of the Gaspar and German Vega clan in the north, to obtain valuable caye property on Ramsey Caye between 2014 and 2015. Tonight, we will show you the similar efforts to grab prime property in Spanish Caye, and how their allies such as the Banos family aided and abetted with swaps of land for money. Aaron Humes reports.

Ramon Rosendo Banos. Roni Ronaldo Banos. Ricardo Ronaldo Banos. Miriam Merida. Miriam and Vanessa Banos. Alyni Quintanilla. Their names are plastered across the one hundred and eighteen title documents obtained by News Five, showing their extensive history of transactions involving land on Ramsey Caye south of Belize City and in the Spanish Creek area. As we showed you on Monday, the Banoses banded together to buy lands on the Caye, eleven blocks of an average of one and a half acres each, for dirt cheap, and within a few months re-sold to various members of the Vega family for thousands in profits. A look at the documents shows that in each case the purchase was completed almost immediately, in several cases including outstanding payments for rent, leases and various taxes, but there is no indication of where the funds came from. In the case of Spanish Creek, the pattern was the same – acres of land bought by Miriam Merida and Ramon Banos; their daughters Miriam and Vanessa and Banos’ daughter-in-law Alyni Quintanilla along the right side ascending near the Belize River for between three and five thousand dollars. Each block consisted of at least forty acres of prime property.

Gaspar Vega

The documents were signed on behalf of then Minister of Lands, Gaspar Vega. Miguel Angel Padia of Cayo paid just under four thousand dollars for his. They all held onto the lands for a small amount of time then sold it to Eduardo and Alma Vega, living in Benque Viejo Town, for a small profit. Again, there is no indication of what is being done with the properties or whether they remain in the hands of the Vegas. It is further confirmation of the extensive and powerful reach of the Vega family and its ability to turn circumstances to its advantage with no impunity – at least, not while Gaspar Vega was in power as Minister of Natural Resources.
