Belmopan Police Reaching Out to Youths in Community

Howell Gillett

The field trip to the Belize Central Prison was organized by Senior Superintendent Howell Gillett of the Belmopan Police. He says that it is part of his formation’s community policing initiative during the summer vacation. Over ten thousand youths are out of school and caught up in mischievous acts. Gillett believes that the program is a way to deter them from crime.

“We want to continue to do all we can to help our young people. I wish I could be doing it for the entire country, but we have the jurisdiction that we are responsible for. So we will start with our Belmopan area and continue from there. And then hope and pray that other formations and organizations will do the same.”

“So continuing the program as well by inviting other children?”

Sr. Supt. Howell Gillett

“Of course; that is a part of it. Mister Murillo, I hope that you don’t get mad with me but we will come as frequent as we could, especially through the remainder of this holiday period and any other opportunity that we get. And the names of these people will be documented so that we don’t bring back the same people.”

Statistics show that Belmopan Police makes the second most arrests for crimes in any municipality.
