Ministry to Meet Housing Needs for Santa Barbara Fire Victims

On Monday night, we told you about the tragic fire on Santa Barbara Street that claimed the life of twenty month old Tyrique Roberts. The baby boy was left sleeping locked inside his home on Sunday night when his mother went to the shop to buy. The fire started and neighbours were not able to rescue the baby. That blaze wiped out a total of four homes and displaced as many as seventeen persons. CEMO has moved the residents into the Saint Martin De Porres Primary School. We spoke with CEMO’s Philip Willoughby who says that he met with area rep Wilfred Elrington who confirmed that they will be relocating the families into proper housing space.

“It is confirmed that the Ministry will now find suitable housing to accommodate those who were affected as a result of the Santa Barbara Street Fire.”

“Do you have an estimated timeline as to when we’d be able to see them move in to the housing unit?”

“The social workers on the ground are trying to complete that task by day’s end today. We tried to aim for yesterday at five, that wasn’t possible. But hopefully we get to do that at the close of today. What they have been doing is contacting landlords to see pricing, cost, location and that type of thing where these affected persons can be relocated to.”
