City gets ready; no escape after five

In Belize City, Councilor Phillip Willoughby is spearheading the efforts of the City Emergency Management Organization, CEMO, and met earlier this evening with law enforcement officials, as well as representatives of other government agencies. The last bus north left from Belize City at five p.m. today, following instructions from NEMO that all public transportation traveling in that direction ended at that particular time. Willoughby, who is also CEMO coordinator, spoke of the plans for Belize City in anticipation of TS Franklin.

“I have been briefed that several businesses have closed down to this end.  Unfortunately or regrettably that is the case.  I am very glad to know that the commercial sector from the city, [members of] the business community are working with the employees to ensure that they have the opportunity prior to other emergencies, the opportunity to invoke their family plan or their personal hurricane plan.  So I’m grateful for that to this end, that they are granted the time off and the opportunity to deal with their families and themselves.”

“And insofar as transportation, where public transportation is concerned, I know that there was a memo that was released earlier in respect of one, having a cutoff time of three o’clock.  I know that that has since been moved back to five o’clock for buses traveling north.  Can you speak to that?”

“Well those deliberations have been had, I believe, with the northern district coordinators; namely Mr. Aragon, who is responsible for the entire north, Ms. Suliema Celiz who is the district coordinator and Mr. Willard Levy for the Corozal.  I believe their committees have discussed and deliberated on that matter and they have been in discussion with NEMO in relation to that.  So as a result of those discussions that report within the advisory was made by NEMO.  I can’t comment as to why or why not, but we are guided by these advisories and we stick to that.”
