Shelters to be open; no alcohol allowed

While the city prepares for the heavy winds and downpour that will accompany the passage of Tropical Storm Franklin, residents won’t be allowed to purchase alcohol. That’s because a decision has been taken to prohibit the sale of liquor until an all-clear has been issued after the storm. That decision, says Willoughby, was agreed upon unanimously.

Phillip Willoughby, CEMO Coordinator

“The police department raised the issue of the sale of liquor and the committees, the chairperson for the committees at the head table agreed that giving the gravity of the situation and the system that’s before us that will request that shops and other entities that sell liquor cease and desist from doing so until we get the all clear from NEMO.  So at least that is the city’s position at this time.  We apologize if any inconvenience is caused but it is that we are opening shelters.  It is that we don’t want the police department to be preoccupied dealing with a disaster within an emergency because of the sale and the drinking of liquor.  So I hope that the wider general public understands the sentiment based on the position we have taken and they cooperate and they work with us.”

“Can you say whether that decision was for Belize City only?”

“No, this is just within this municipality and our jurisdiction.  We can’t say for any other jurisdiction.  But for the mere fact that we will be opening shelters, like I said, the police department and CEMO is on high alert.  Given the weather conditions we have to, we started, it is in the best interest of the residents of Belize City.”
