Taiwan’s man in Belize scratches head over disparate grants to Guatemala

Charles Liu

Ambassador Charles Liu has weighed in on the sixty million dollar grant awarded to Belize by the Taiwanese government.  His comments are in relation to the six hundred and fifty million U.S. dollars that neighboring Guatemala received in grant and loan from the island nation to construct a road to the harbor community of Puerto Barrios.  Not only is the diplomatic representative shocked that Belize received a paltry sum by comparison, but he is equally surprised that the seemingly exorbitant request was honored given Taiwan’s present economic reality.

Charles Liu, Taiwan’s Ambassador to Belize

“You know I am really shocked and surprised but let me tell my Belize family, I arrived here in Belize last November and when I came, the Prime Minister Dean Barrow, the Foreign Minister Elrington took me as a part of the Belize family. I appreciate it very much so I want Belize good. I want Belize better and better, day after day, year after years. So when I read the news that Guatemala get this amount, I was totally shocked, I was totally surprised; I cannot believe that. So I immediately checked with Taipei, what is really going on? And Taipei gave me the answer.  This is currently what Guatemala request, what they request and are considering the tight financial situation Taiwan is presently in right now, it is by no means possible; it is impossible. So I think since I am a member of the Belize family, I strongly believe, I will do my best to make Belize get what she can get. This is the responsibility of the ambassador to Belize and it is the contributions that I want to contribute to Belize as a return to the friendship that the Prime Minister, the Foreign Minister and all of my Belize friend offer to me. So that is why I strongly believe that as long as I am here, the relations between Taiwan and Belize is getting stronger. Taiwan will always be Belize’s best friend and I also believe Belize will always be Taiwan’s strong, steady friend. And I do hope this friendship; this mutual support, will be everlasting and getting stronger and stronger.  So I have confidence in Belize and I also hope Belize should have confidence in me, in the embassy and in Taiwan.”

Yeah, secure the money for Belize, I can’t understand how Guatemala can get more money when Belize and Taiwan are close friends.
