Cuba delivers physiotherapist for HelpAge, Inspiration Center

Older persons in Belize will now have a specialist assisting with their physical therapy. HelpAge Belize, after three years of lobbying with the Ministry of Health, now has a Cuban physiotherapist who will be assigned to HelpAge Belize and its various outreach centers, including the Sister Cecilia Home for the Elderly, and the Inspiration Centre. She was introduced this morning and spoke with News Five.

“I’m a physiotherapist from Cuba. My work experience is in child rehabilitation. I also work with adults and with athletes. I’m here to fulfill a job our revolution has granted me in order to improve the health of the Belizean people, as well as exchange our skills. I’m here to work and I hope the people here are happy with the work I do.”

“We need to look at issues or areas of challenges with stroke, we have the non-communicable disease challenges among our older persons; one of them has to do with hypertension and some of these individuals will have a stroke. And that stroke creates a level of disability. As it relates to their movements and so the physiotherapy would be there to help with that mobility issue, strengthening of the muscles. We also need the physiotherapist for the clients who may have arthritis. We also need the physiotherapist for those who are frail, they are not able, and that strength is not there, so they can do strengthening exercise. We know our older persons are subject to fall and they receive injury to the arm, leg or wherever. The physiotherapy offers services there, we have incidents of breast cancer, and the physiotherapist can assist in doing special arm exercises showing them what to do. We have our daily day activity program; one of them includes exercises so that physiotherapist will be involved in that area. We have our home bound clients, who are bed bound, or some of them with mobility issues, that physiotherapist will be utilized within the home. And we will do outpatient clinic to have those with fractures with different form of injuries who can also be assisted.”

Dr. Nunez is part of the Cuban Medical Brigade established in Belize for twenty-six years and is sponsored by the Ministry.
