Who Came for 85-Year-Old Gregorio de Leon in Orange Walk?

Gregorio de Leon

For the second time this week a murder has been reported in Orange Walk Town. While involving less drama than the sensational shooting between friends Daniel Sosa and Hilmar Alamilla last Saturday, the death of eighty-five-year old retiree Gregorio de Leon at his home in the Marcus Canul area north of the town center is no less puzzling. Who would want to target an elderly grandfather with no known income or assets, and why? It is a question both Orange Walk police and his family want an answer to tonight. Aaron Humes has the story.

Very little is known about eighty-five-year-old Gregorio de Leon. He lived on San Estevan Street in the Marcus Canul section of town with his family and was retired from work. So who would want him murdered?

Insp. Jose Mendez, Deputy O.C., Orange Walk Formation

“Sometime around seven-thirty a.m. this morning, police responded to a call on San Estevan Street, which is in the Marcus Canul area here in Orange Walk Town. Upon arrival they found an elderly male person, later identified to be Gregorio de Leon, eighty-five years of age, motionless, facing up with what appears to be injuries to his head. As per procedure the scene was processed, thereafter the body was transferred to the Northern Regional Hospital morgue, awaiting a post-mortem examination.”

“So at this time it is not clear what caused the wound to the back of the head, whether it’s a gun or a blunt object?”

“At this point in time we are investigating as a murder investigation, we are awaiting the end result of the post-mortem.”

According to police, De Leon was last seen by relatives around seven in the evening on Thursday, but there was no indication of how anyone could have gotten inside the property and attacked him, or indeed a motive for such an attack. Police have begun questioning two persons of interest.

Insp. Jose Mendez, Deputy O.C., Orange Walk Formation

“We are presently investigating, we have two persons in custody for questioning and see where it leads us from there.”

“Can you offer any information of who Mr. De Leon was – was he operating a business, anything that could say where the investigation is going at this point?”

Insp. Jose Mendez

“So far we have found out that he is retired and just a labourer; we have no other information in respect to his background.”

This evening, police confirmed that the cause of De Leon’s death was manual strangulation, adding another layer of intrigue to the story. Aaron Humes reporting for News Five.
