Nevis Betancourth Still Hospitalized as Charges Mulled

Jose Castellanos

San Ignacio Police say that investigators continue to gather evidence in the shooting death of Jose Castellanos, as the shooter, Nevis Betancourth remains hospitalized in a stable condition after being chopped to the arm. According to one report, Castellanos was at “Comida Belicena y Latina” restaurant in Santa Elena on the night of July twenty-eighth, when he was shot and killed. Around eight p.m., the Honduran national was in the bar when Betancourth reportedly walked up to him and fired several shots. It is alleged that in self-defense, Castellanos got hold of a machete and chopped Betancourth, almost severing his arm. Tonight, Commander Richard Rosado says the investigation continues because there are conflicting statements reaching the police.

“At the moment we are treating it as a death investigation. The investigators are still recording statements and upon completion of the investigation, the file will be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecution for advice. I must mention that Nevis is still admitted at the hospital for treatment.”

“Now initially, the report coming from the police was that Nevis acted in self-defense. We were able to get an interview from the business owner, the bar owner, who says that anybody that was there could have seen that Nevis was the one that aggressed Castellanos who then defended himself with a machete and it ended up with Jose’s demise. Has the police gotten that report of what had happened?”

Supt. Richard Rosado

“Like I mention the investigators are still recording statements from witnesses who were at the scene and we are still treating it as a death investigation. And as soon as the file is completely we will forward it to the D.P.P. for her advice.”

“And what of Nevis’s condition? Is he in a critical condition?”

Supt. Richard Rosado

“No, he is in a stable condition. We have placed police at the hospital for his safety.”
