Taxes Cause Suspension of Tropic Air Flights to Mexico, Honduras

John Greif III

Tropic Air has suspended three of its international flights to Chetumal and Merida in Mexico and San Pedro Sula, Honduras. About five years ago, the domestic airline further expanded its services outside of Belize and picked up five additional international flights – to Cancun, Merida and Chetumal in Mexico and Roatan and San Pedro Sula, Honduras. Flights to Flores, Peten have been ongoing for thirty years and continue to date. But unfortunately, following the imposition of new government taxes on flights, several of the flights have become unprofitable. President for Tropic Air John Greif the Third spoke to News Five today about the suspension of the international flights.

“It is common for airlines to throw routes against the wall and see what sticks so every year we have a swat analysis on these routes and what their potential is. And it turns out that San Pedro Sula, Merida and Chetumal are very weak and we see potential there, but not a lot. The three routes were not doing so well. Some of them were slightly profitable, some of them were slightly unprofitable, some of them broke even. But with the introduction of the new travel tax, they all fell into a money losing situation. And I think part of it is that the customer doesn’t care if they are paying the Government of Belize, the Government of Mexico, Tropic Air, paying Johnny Greif; they don’t care. All they know is that they are paying out six hundred dollars. So in the case of Chetumal, it was dramatic. The tax went in and the next week we had no business. We normally operate Monday, Wednesday and Friday. So it went from one or two or three a day each way to no flight, none at all.”

  1. Mike Green says:

GOB, I hate to say it BUT the tourism industry told you so. This is going to be BAD for all businesses. Affordable access to regional countries is a must. GOB has made another bad decision and we need to demand the repeal of the increase in departure taxes.
