Mayoral Aspirant Philip Willoughby Defends Record

Philip Willoughby

This afternoon, we spoke to councilor Philip Willoughby in the ‘Pink Jungle’ area of Pickstock, where he was donating garbage containers to residents of the hutments, as he did in the Mayflower Street area last week. It was clear that he was still smarting from the ‘double-banking’ he received from opponent Dion Leslie and Mayor Darrell Bradley on Tuesday.  They attempted to convey in an interview that while his contribution to the city and its municipal government is worthwhile and valued, it doesn’t quite stack up, in the mayor’s view, with the accomplishments of Leslie in how each man is qualified to be the next chief administrator of Belize City. An indignant Willoughby detailed for News Five his many accomplishments in City Hall as proving him worthy of that title.

Philip Willoughby, Mayoral Aspirant

“You recall when the landfill used to burn? Who resolved that problem? Thereafter, who was the councilor who was a part of the solid waste management transition prior to his arrival? There was a time when Belize Waste Control used to throw garbage in front of City Hall, and they used to go on strikes – who resolved that problem whether professionally or administratively? My point I am making is that I am grateful that I have earned my Masters’ degree, and wear a necktie and a suit in the board room or the conference room; and that same individual, who goes by the name of Philip Willoughby, can roll up his sleeves and get in the community and work alongside, with the community; and that can be proven across the City. So they can’t discredit or dispute the quality of work and the level of community involvement that I have been engaged with this far along my career. I don’t know how is it – but it is what it is, and we move forward and we stay positive, and we hope that my candidacy is the successful one based on my dedication, hard work and commitment and based on my report card by serving this beautiful and fair city that we live in.”

“That tells me that you are not pulling out?”

Philip Willoughby

“Of course not! Why should I be pulling out? Why should I? Why exactly should I?  For no reason.”
