Mayor says Philip Willoughby doesn’t have what it takes

But does that mean that the man in the Superman hat has met his kryptonite? This would not be the first time that Willoughby has not had party backing for higher office – he had to step aside for Bradley in 2012, and shortly thereafter for Tracey Taegar-Panton when she was the party’s choice to run in the Albert constituency. Mayor Bradley, who had to contend with similar treatment before displacing former minister Santino Castillo in Caribbean Shores, says it is certainly nothing personal against Willoughby, but he could not help but extol Leslie’s virtues in answering that question.

Darrell Bradley, Belize City Mayor

Darrell Bradley

“No, let me not say that at all. Philip Willoughby is a colleague of mine and he is a friend of mine but ion politics it’s about choices. And when I access the kind of achievements that we have made over the past years, notwithstanding the facts that I conceded we met significant challenges; I will have to make a decision like ever single voter. So that when we had elections even for Caribbean Shore, you had Darrell Bradley and you had Kareem Musa, my wife even told me. She said Darrell you pray but people also pray for Kareem Musa and it’s not that they don’t like me but people also have a choice so that you Hipolito when election comes hopefully if you vote, you will make a vote, so it is not that I have anything against Councilor Willoughby, it is not that I view him with any disdain or anything but I have worked with both of them, I have worked with Councilor Dion Leslie. Dion Leslie has served as Mayor as you may remember when Zenaida Moya took maternity leave, he was acting as Mayor for extended period of time. He has represented the City Council in an international capacity because he has served as Councilor with responsibility for Foreign Relations and Sister Cities. He is eminently qualified, I think that he has the temperament, the personality to really bring people together, not only U.D.P. die hard supporters but he has the personality to bring P.U.P. and people who are neutral over to politics. I think that this is one of the things that I was able to do and so it’s not that I am saying anything against Councilor Willoughby, it is not that I have anything against him as a person or as a leader when I am saying in relation to who I would support for the mayoral candidate, it will have to be Dion Leslie.”
