BERT collects new air ambulance on nineteenth anniversary

Today marks the nineteenth anniversary since BERT opened its doors in 1998, offering pre-medical ambulatory care to Belizeans. It was initiated by local Rotarians along with Yvette Burks Barnes, who has managed the organization since inception. But BERT is setting up itself to expand its services countrywide and on the occasion of its anniversary, it officially received a Piper aircraft that replaces the current plane used to transport patients to the regional hospitals. General Manager and National Coordinator, Andrei Carillo, says that the plane is valued at seventy-five thousand dollars.

“We are the lucky recipients of a donated piper Cherokee six aircraft. It replaces the Cherokee six that we previously had in our fleet. Unfortunately there was an incident and the previous one was damaged. So Wings of Hope loan us this aircraft that is behind us. So through donations, we have been able to get another piper aircraft, a replacement. So this one is being taken back to St. Louis to Wings of Hope.”

“You talk about the incident; could you just give us a little more details on that?”

“The incident happened down south. Unfortunately, the aircraft hit a dog running across the tarmac and it damaged the aircraft beyond repair. So Wings of Hope is our donor organization and they loan us the aircraft that we have here. We did get a replacement one so the one that was delivered to us yesterday is the replacement aircraft for the damaged one. Wings of Hope has been around before the formation of BERT; they were actually based in San Pedro. The relationship that we’ve built with BERT and Wings of Hope includes the Wagner Foundation and the Wings of Hope from St. Louis. Wagner Foundation is also supported by Burlington Rotary International as well and so these donor organizations are the ones who actually help form BERT and also with the Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Belize, they also assisted with the formation of BERT.”
