Convicted killer escapes from prison

Story Picture
We’re not sure what a convicted murderer was doing on a work detail miles away from his cell at Hattieville, and until prison officials decide to talk, we may never know. But what is important tonight is that a dangerous convict is on the loose. News 5′s Jacqueline Woods has the story.

Jacqueline Woods, Reporting

Today the police were on the Western Highway checking vehicles and warning motorists about the escape of inmate Roberto Yatxol, who was serving a twenty-five year to life sentence for murder and manslaughter. Prison authorities as usual would not talk to News 5 about the circumstances involving the incident and we could not get any information from the Ministry of Home Affairs. According to Sgt. Chris Noble, the officer in charge of the Hattieville police station, they were informed that the escape occurred in Flowers Bank Village around eleven this morning.

“The information we have is that he was out with an officer and he basically slipped the person.”

“We’ve set up check points and have basically being asking people to assist us if they should see him. Yatxol was serving a twenty-five year sentence for manslaughter and he is considered dangerous.”

Reports are that at the time of the escape, Yatxol, who is a Guatemalan, was on a work programme. Authorities believe Yatxol may be heading home and are advising anyone travelling or living along the Western Highway to be on the lookout for the convict.

“Be careful on the road. If you see this person, Yatxol is about five, eleven in height. He is considered dangerous, he is serving a very long sentence, was sorry, and we wouldn’t want anybody to pick him up and then to…at least to get him back would be a plus for us.”

In 1996 Yatxol was convicted after he killed police officer Sydney Nunez in Benque Viejo Del Carmen. Jacqueline Woods for News 5.

If you know the whereabouts of Roberto Yatxol please call the nearest police station.
