Fundraiser Saturday for New Domestic Violence Shelter in San Pedro

A local organization in San Pedro called Raise Me Up is asking the public for help to get a shelter completed. The shelter called Hope Haven will serve as a safe space for children who are abused or suffer neglect. The house has been in the works since late last year, but the community was spurred into quick action to get the shelter done because of the recent abuse and murder of Faye Lin Cannon, allegedly at the hands of her adopted parents. On Saturday, San Pedranos and the expat community will be hosting a fundraiser and they need your help.

On the Phone: Christopher Burkey, Event Coordinator, Hope Haven Fundraiser

“The Raise me up organization here in San Pedro – they have a bunch of community programmes that they are doing. The one that I am helping out with is the Hope Haven. It’s the children’s home on the island with separate quarters for boys and girls and bathrooms and a room for a house mom. It is something really needed and with the recent tragedy with Faye Lin, it just whipped us all into a frenzy to get this thing finished. So, we would like to have fun and party out here so we are throwing an event on Saturday out here with live music, and we’ll have some deejays, selling some barbecue  and rice and beans all day Saturday to see if we can raise at least thirty thousand dollars to finish the inside of the building. The Lion’s donated the use of the building, Raise me up just donated the funds to finish it.  For this event, we are just looking for volunteers and musicians if they want to plug in and play and of course we will be selling drinks and beers and if you want to donate any type of beverage that we can sell. Elvi’s Kitchen is helping out with rice and beans; El Fogon is giving a big pot of soup; Eco-Friendly Solutions is sending out the disposable, biodegradable containers, so people from all over the country are helping out. It is sad that it had to take a tragedy to do this, but in Faye’s memory we are going to get this children’s shelter built.”

The fundraiser will be held on Saturday at the Lion’s Den in down town San Pedro from eleven o’clock in the morning to about midnight.
