F.F.B. Removes General Secretary Michael Blease

Michael Blease

A new administrator has taken up the reins of the Football Federation of Belize, following the dismissal of former General Secretary Michael Blease on Tuesday.  The termination of Blease’s contract and his abrupt removal from high office comes amid ongoing turmoil within the F.F.B.  Several weeks ago, the organization failed to meet quorum in order to proceed with a congress.  During that gathering of football stakeholders, the election of a new president was to have been held, however, the congress never got off the ground due to a boycott.  In a subsequent interview with Acting F.F.B. President Marlon Kuylen, he told the media that a serious shaking up of the F.F.B. was in the offing.  That restructuring, for all intents and purposes, has begun with the firing of Blease whom Kuylen says, simply had to go.  This afternoon, his replacement was shown around the F.F.B. compound and was formally introduced to members of staff.  Former Magistrate Earl Jones, according to Kuylen, is the right man for the job.

“As you all know, we are in a situation that is not a good one and a lot of things have come to light and in a sense it’s timely, it’s fortunate at the same time because now we realize that what we have been doing, what we thought were wrong, actually it was worse than we thought.  We see that now we have to make significant changes and we started on Monday by releasing the general secretary and appointing Mr. Earl Jones as Interim General Secretary for as long as needed.  The idea is that we will advertise the post and have people apply for it and then we’ll choose the best qualified person for the position.”

“Is this transition without challenge, from a legal perspective?”

Marlon Kuylen

“Well, we anticipate that there will be some challenges because of contracts that were signed, but in the mean time we have to bite the bullet and do what we need to do.  So we’ll cross that bridge when we get there.”

“It would seem however, that at this point, with all the turmoil that’s ongoing, another controversy over contracts being breached or cancelled prematurely is a headache that you certainly don’t need as the acting president of the F.F.B.”

Marlon Kuylen

“Well, like in every contract there are always ways to come out of them and we will be looking at those.  We’ll look at all angles, we have people looking at them right now as we speak and like I said, we’ll cross that bridge when we get there.”

“Does this sudden change in the command bode well for the organization on a whole, given the controversies that are currently underway?”

Marlon Kuylen

“Oh yes, definitely.  Just in the person of Mr. Jones, who’s a very credible person.  To us it’s a step in the right direction.  I mean it can’t get any worse than it was before. It was time for him to go and that’s all I can say about it for now.”

“But specifically to the allegations that were made by the dissenting associations and the PLB, has it been established that Mr. Blease participated in a biased pre-election process as he was being accused?”

Marlon Kuylen

“It is alleged that he did manipulate the electoral committee and the appeals committee, but the other items that were used in his dismissal far outnumber those allegations.  So, in other words, there were enough items on that list that would substantiate his dismissal.”
