Rowan Garel Wins Taiwanese Award for Book Translation

Rowan Garel has been in Canada for about a year pursuing studies in Languages and Anthropology, but that has not stopped him from inspiring others. Recently, he was in New York to receive a big recognition called the Fervent Love of Lives Award from Taiwan’s Cho Ta-kuan Foundation. About a year ago, the Taiwan Embassy in Belize contacted the BCVI because they thought Rowan would be a great nominee for Belize and so he bested several other nominees from around the world for the prestigious award.  We spoke with the BCVI’s Carla Ayres Musa and Rowan’s mother Milagro Garel – both were beaming with pride about the recognition of the teen who continues to make big strides – they say they thought he was deserving of the award.

“We agreed with them that Rowan would be a fantastic nominee for this and we put all the information together. We actually didn’t say anything to the family because we wanted it to be a surprise if it did come through and it did. What this award represents is selflessness, humanitarianism and heroism within the context of the person’s spending. And I think Rowan exceeds that. I mean, his work, his heart and his spirit is far reaching and we are just so excited and so proud of Rowan and his family and we couldn’t be happier for this award for Rowan to receive.   This is actually something through the book Climb Walk Dive: Adventures of Rowan Garel, which was published last year and at the launch of the book, the then ambassador had proposed that we have this book translated to Mandarin and published. And so through the Image Factory Foundation and Yasser Musa, that was done and should be launched in September in Taiwan where Rowan will again be awarded for the Fervent Love of Lives Award and go into the public launch of this book.”

“We have been extremely proud of Rowan, but this award just gives recognition and I think that even for Rowan, that I think getting the word out there, Belize has this dynamic program as he calls it where the country really advocates for people like him. And so, of course, we are very proud and very humbled and it is privilege that our son is able to accomplish so much. But it goes definitely because of people like the BCVI who has helped him, the public, and the tremendous support that he has had. When I ask Rowan what is it that he looks forward to doing, because we miss him and he is not here, he said I know I miss Belize as well, but my idea is to gain as much experience as possible and be able to come back and share my knowledge with all the students of BCVI.  He travels on his own, Andrea. Yesterday he jumped on a place and went to New York on his own and last night he was back in Canada all on his own. So, it just shows that it can all be accomplished. The world is aware that there are people like Rowan so there are resources that can help him.”
