Elodio Aragon Jr.

The biennial crime statistics for the first half of 2017 were released on Monday, and the report indicates that the number of murders have only reduced marginally when compared to the same period in 2016.  From January to June there have been seventy murders, three less than last year.  Of that number, thirty-one arrests have been made thus far.  The Belize Police Department remains optimistic, however, that it can continue to drive down those figures.  This afternoon, Minister of State Elodio Aragon Junior spoke on a number of initiatives being undertaken by the department to curb dangerous crimes across the country.

Elodio Aragon Jr., Minister of State, Police

“The Belize Police Department is working in terms of trying to solve these murders, you know.  We are carrying out investigations as best as possible.  I know the Head, National Crime Investigation Branch has his people and investigators working on it along with members of the police department in the various districts.  These are the challenges, you know, we live in a society right now where there are a number of shooting incidents and a number of people being killed on the streets.  I know that the police department also works on a breakdown in terms of the different, when you look at murder especially, what are the motives behind each of these murders.  I know the commissioner works on these likewise, and I will tell you that when you look at these statistics you find that a lot of it, when it comes in terms of the murders and I talk specifically of murders because that is what gives the greatest level of fear in our public in terms of when we talk about murders.  And therefore, you know, I tend to focus on this because at the end of the day; however it is viewed in terms of the murders that is how the perception of crime is viewed within the public domain.  I want to tell the public out there that definitely our priority right now is to focus on gangs and gun-related crimes.”
