Coast Guard Rescue Boaters, Catch Illegal Fishermen Off P.G.

A team of coastguard officers was busy at sea on Thursday evening off the shores of Punta Gorda Town.  An operation led by coastguard personnel and TIDE rangers responded to a distress call shortly before six o’clock when they were informed that a boat had overturned somewhere east of town.  Fortunately for the four occupants of the vessel, they were all rescued by tour operator Dennis Garbutt who had also received a call about the capsized vessel.  Immediately following the rescue, the joint patrol then headed to Port Honduras Marine Reserve where they spotted a suspicious vessel within the protected area.  When the team attempted to board the vessel, the captain and his boatman took off at full speed and a chase ensued in the southern waters.  When the boat was intercepted it was discovered that an adult and a minor were onboard and were in possession of illegal fishing gear. Lieutenant Greg Soberanis provided details during a media brief this morning.

“At approximately five-thirty yesterday evening, the coastguard received a distress call that a vessel had capsized in Punta Gorda, just east of Punta Gorda Town, about fifteen minutes away.  We responded by deploying the joint patrol with TIDE and the coastguard to the location.  Arriving at the location, the personnel who were onboard the capsized vessel had been rescued and taken to safe harbor.  We confirmed that all personnel were safe and that there were no injury and that all was well.  Upon confirming that personnel onboard the capsized vessel were well and that there were no injuries, the joint patrol consisting of TIDE and the coastguard proceeded back to the operating base.  The joint patrol decided that they would conduct a night patrol in the area of Port Honduras Marine Reserve where a vessel was sighted which was suspected of conducting illegal fishing in the area.  The joint patrol decided that they would conduct a boarding on the suspected vessel.  Approaching the vessel, the suspected vessel that was conducting the illegal fishing fled from the joint coastguard and TIDE patrol.  A hot pursuit ensued and eventually the vessel was intercepted, where they were found to be in possession of illegal fishing gears, namely gill nets.  They were detained, taken to Punta Gorda Town and handed over to police to be charged.”
