Minister Insists Alvarine Burgess Questions Were ‘Out of Order’

Anthony ‘Boots’ Martinez

Martinez maintains that the questions posed to him were beyond the pale, and resulted in his terse responses.  He also strongly believes that Burgess should never have been called before the committee, since her name does not appear in the auditor general’s special report.

Anthony ‘Boots’ Martinez, Minister of Human Development

“If you want to get to the bottom of the thing, and that’s why I maintain, in my humble opinion that there is no way that Ms. Burgess should have been called before anybody officially named in the report.”

“Sir, the perception right now is that what played out yesterday in the National Assembly [Building], in the senate itself, was something that will be watched worldwide.  In some quarters they are saying that your attitude yesterday was pompous and arrogant and how those in the international realm will be looking at that and at these proceedings.  Do you have any comment towards that?”

Anthony ‘Boots’ Martinez

“I noh know bout pompous and arrogant.  Stating a fact is being arrogant?”

“Sir, but maybe in the manner in which you answered, the tone of voice you used may have come across that way, as disrespectful and rude.”

“Arrogance has a meaning.  Arrogance has a meaning, and just as how I’ve maintained, recommendation has a meaning.  Whatsoever is people’s view, and like ah seh, I have no difficulty, that is me, that is my style.  I believe in being factual.  Maybe ah kinda lee emotional, even on interviews and so forth, but for me, I find myself [I] was well in order.  I find some of the question that they were asking me were out of order and I say it.”
