Hearing Gets Political as Ministers Taunt P.U.P. Rivals

Anthony “Boots” Martinez

In today’s appearances before the Senate Special Select Committee, both Ministers Martinez and Castro took strong objection to answering questions that they felt appeared outside of the scope of the inquiry, which they narrowly interpreted to be only the times their names appeared in the report. They especially recoiled, in Martinez’s case, from the mention of the name of Alvarine Burgess, and in Castro’s, from the multiple list of recommendations recorded by former Director Maria Marin. Castro claimed political victimization, suggesting that where there is no smoke, there is no fire.

Michel Chebat, P.U.P. Senator

“How many times have you given a recommendation for a visa?”

Anthony “Boots” Martinez, Minister of Human Development

“You mean in my political career?”

Michel Chebat

“Yes, as a minister; I would want to limit it as a minister.”

Anthony “Boots” Martinez

“I would say about three or four.”

Michel Chebat

“And would that include the two times that Alvarine Burgess came to you?”

Anthony “Boots” Martinez

“No, man, no, no, no; noh include which two times? Me and Alvarine Burgess noh have nothing about Immigration.”

Michel Chebat

“She never came to you?”

Anthony “Boots” Martinez

“No, sir.”

Michel Chebat

“Never?”

Anthony “Boots” Martinez

“Stick to the report; no, sir. Talk about the Zhen Long or Zhen Li or Wen Yu…”

Michel Chebat

“I am asking the questions.”

Anthony “Boots” Martinez

“No, sir. (Cross-talking)”

Michel Chebat

“My question to you, minister…”

Anthony “Boots” Martinez

“Your question is out of order, sir.”

Michel Chebat

“The recommendations that you made, did those recommendations also include two for Alvarine Burgess.”

Anthony “Boots” Martinez

“I explained to you, sir, that I did the recommendation on the request of Mr. Zhen Li; I did no recommendation for no Alvarine Burgess.”

Michel Chebat

“And when Alvarine Burgess said she paid you two thousand dollars for each recommendation, is that so?”

Anthony “Boots” Martinez

“Put it this way: dah political grandstand you want to be on or what? Is that political grandstanding? Alvarine Burgess’ name is not even mentioned in the report, sir!”

Michel Chebat

“Minister, Miss Burgess has come before this Committee and she has given sworn testimony…”

Anthony “Boots” Martinez

“Well, listen to me, people say all kinds of things, sir; people say all kinds of things, so I noh wah hear nothing about Miss Burgess whose name is not even featured in the report; talk about where my name appears here.”

Michel Chebat

“Why would they specifically go to Minister Castro for a recommendation?”

Edmond Castro

Edmond Castro, Minister of Transport and NEMO

“The same way how people from the constituency that you want to run in come to you for recommendations.”

Michel Chebat

“Well, they don’t and I don’t sign recommendations.”

Edmond Castro

“They don’t because you can’t win. When you learn to win they will come to you.”

Michel Chebat

“Perhaps so, Minister, perhaps.”

Edmond Castro

“Not anytime soon.”

Michel Chebat

“And in this process where you were recommending, how much were you being paid?”

Edmond Castro

“Nobody paid me, Senator.”

Michel Chebat

“Nobody paid you? None of these Chinese pay you.”

Edmond Castro

“Senator, nobody paid me. You can’t pay me for the work and the love that I have for people; you can’t pay me for that.”

Michel Chebat

“So when Alvarine said that she paid you two thousand dollars per recommendation, she’s lying?”

Edmond Castro

“I think that is P.U.P. smoke.”

Michel Chebat

“Wasn’t that part of your case with her?”

Edmond Castro

“That’s P.U.P. smoke; you guys are so desperate to get into power you are trying to create fire when there is no fire.”

  1. Uncle Beji says:

Two blind mice. See how they lie. They used their power to cheat, lie, steal and allow cohorts to smuggle, but not before the bank account is all fat and snuggled.

My beloved Belize, we are hurt, we are ashamed to watch how corrupt our elected representatives are. Some more than others. As a people, we are weary, we are weak, but the rats keep getting fatter.

The crooks have become so brazen that they go in under oath to these immigration hearings and make a mockery of the entire process.

Lord, why have you forsaken us?
