Vidal Concedes Worth of Community Policing

Marco Vidal

Senior Superintendent Marco Vidal, during his tenure as head of the Gang Suppression Unit, decried community policing as a failed attempt by the department to reach out to the citizenry.  Since then, he has walked back that position, after seeing significant inroads being made through the provision of community services.  Coming into Eastern Division South, Vidal says that the men and women under his command are priority number one.

“The community policing is a department philosophy and therefore those will continue, and the whole purpose of community policing is to foster the relationship with the community to understand the problem and to look at ways to resolve them.  So the information we are getting is that in some areas there is visibility for the police and in other areas there is not, so we need to look at those areas where there are not in place and then improve on those because it has allowed a better interaction between the police and the community and that is the most crucial part there anyway.”

“From a broader perspective, can you share with us an approach or a course of action in respect of your helm for Eastern Division South?”

Sr. Supt Marco Vidal

“Well, first of all, one of the foremost things that we will be looking at is the welfare of our officers because our greatest resource are the rank and file.  So we will be looking at the welfare of our officers.  Of course, we will be looking at the continuation of community policing programs, but in tandem with that we will also have community led policing because community policing does not mean that the criminals are allowed to do as they please.  So the law has to apply.  So where the law has to be applied then will be applied.”
