Holy Emmanuel Fire Claims Woman’s Goods

A woman claims that a family dispute that started out with threats has gone too far. She alleges it has resulted in arson that wiped out her home on Sunday night. The unemployed, single mother says the fire has hit her hard because she has nowhere to go. She says that moments before her home on Holy Emmanuel Street in Belize City went up in flames, a relative of her ex-husband called and threatened that he would torch the house. News Five’s Andrea Polanco has more.

This is what’s left of a small wooden home off Holy Emmanuel Avenue. Shortly before eight on Sunday night the two bedroom structure went up in flames.The owner says it was arson – and it’s as a result of a family dispute.

“When I reached deh half hour after that, [beep] call. And he say that how he wah shoot up my house and he wah kill my son and kill all ah we and ih wah bun down fi we house.”

“Who dah [beep]?”

 

Voice of: Phyllis Belisle

“[Beep] dah the nephew of my children father andthat dah why this problem start to happen. He owe me wah big bill dah family court and due to that a lotta threat di come to we from December. When I reach mi daughter house he call and say that.  Bout twenty minutes after that my sista call me and say deh just bun down yuh house.”

 

Andrea Polanco

“You are a hundred percent sure that someone set this house on fire; it wasn’t an accidental thing, maybe by candle?”

 

Voice of: Phyllis Belisle

“No. Dah nuh no candle and I nuh have no current and then one thing miss, I nuh left no light inna my house.”

 

Residents in the area claim that the house was empty. But Belisle says she lost all her belongings. She is not sure if house was burglarized before it was set on fire.

 

Voice of: Phyllis Belisle

“Mi TV gone, my bed gone, mi daughter bed gone, mi stove gone, mi refridge gone, mi stove gone, clothes gone, shoes gone, pot gone, money gone everything gone. I nuh have nothing, miss.”

“You nuh have an estimate of how much you lost in the fire?”

 

Voice of: Phyllis Belisle

“I have an estimate of like five thousand dollars because as I say, I dah nuh wah person weh have wah job. I just manage that on my own with my children deh. That dah mi my last, miss.”

 

Andrea Polanco

“You are certain you had stuff inside this house?”

 

Voice of: Phyllis Belisle

“I had stuff inside the house maybe deh tek it before deh bun down the house. So even weh deh nuh si inna the house dah because deh gone with it.”

 

Andrea Polanco

“It doesn’t appear that there was anything inside the house?”

 

Voice of: Phyllis Belisle

“Yes. Things mi deh in the house.”

 

Andrea Polanco

“So, how do you move on from here, Miss Belisle, you’ve lost your home?”

 

Voice of: Phyllis Belisle

“I move on standing right here. Because I nuh got nothing. I nuh got nowhere fi sleep and I nuh got nothing fi eat.”
