Left Waiting by Senate, “Boots” Derides “Circus” Inquiry

Anthony “Boots” Martinez

The public hearings of the Senate Special Select Committee resumed today with Immigration Clerk Ady Pacheco reappearing before the senate panel.  We will have highlights of that testimony later on, but first to a story which developed on the fringes of today’s hearing in Belmopan. Former Ministers of Immigration and Nationality Carlos Perdomo and Elvin Penner have so far been the only Cabinet-rank individuals to testify before the inquiry, although the names of numerous current Government Ministers have been called in the context of the Auditor General’s Report and otherwise. One of those is Minister of Human Development Anthony Martinez, who was summoned to testify in response to allegations that he worked with visa agent turned whistleblower Alvarine Burgess on a few occasions, at the alleged behest of senior police officer Rochelle Chan, to obtain visa recommendations for Asian nationals. Martinez strongly denies the allegations but his chance to testify this morning was postponed for a future date. While the Minister told reporters that he has no problem testifying, he does question the reason why he was called to the inquiry and says that it has turned into “a circus.”

Anthony “Boots” Martinez, Minister of Human Development

“On my entry over here today, well prepared to go, I was informed that the Committee was not ready for me yet. I have some fundamental difficulty – I think this Senate inquiry [is beginning] to become a kind of circus; I don’t know, I don’t know.”

Reporter

“Did they give you any explanation as to why having given you this summons today, they cancelled?”

Anthony “Boots” Martinez

“No explanation at all. Taking me out of my busy schedule – today is my constituency day and so on and you summon me? In my humble opinion, the meat of the matter and what was anticipated was for Ministers to be called and testify.”

Reporter

“So you’ve been informed of another date when you should appear?”

Anthony “Boots” Martinez

“I’ve never been informed of another date; they just said deh no ready fi me yet. I noh know when deh wah ready fi me.”

Reporter

“Sir, I get the sense that you are treating this particular issue with a sense of urgency, since your character has been called into question in these hearings.”

Anthony “Boots” Martinez

“I don’t worry about the character called in question; my character called into question almost on a daily basis – wrongfully, but that is not an issue with me; the issue is what is before the Senate, and so I think I am not here – the Senate called me to question my character. I think that the summons said, testify in regards to what happened in regards to the immigration thing.”
