The competition was close, but on Saturday night Belmopan native Jennifer Louise Smith was crowned the new Miss Y.W.C.A. 2017-2018, succeeding Ms. Eleanor Sutherland. Smith won the crowd over at the Bliss Center for the Performing Arts with a powerful re-telling of her life story in song and monologue. She overcame neglect in childhood and an abusive marriage and at sixty years young, feels she has much more to give. She spoke to News Five at the Y’s offices this afternoon.

“As a woman I told myself that this got to be better and for my life to be better I am the one who have to prove that to myself, not to others, to me. So the third segment of my challenge was who I am today. I am proud to let everyone know that I am a woman of strength all the things that I have experienced in my life did not keep me down but it gives me force to seek higher, move higher, be who you really are, let that real Jennifer Louise Smith in you come out and that is exactly who I am today. I can take on any challenge, I can take on anyone and that’s why today I love children so much. Because I as a child was neglected for love and I can give love. Many people say how can you give what you haven’t learned? What you didn’t know about. I am living proof that you can love without receiving it.”

Jean Lucas placed second and Leolin Humes third. Smith takes home a basketful of prizes including two round trip tickets courtesy of Maya Island Air, five hundred dollars cash, a necklace from Medina’s House of Jewelry and a wicker chair from Hummingbird Furnishings among many others.
