Police Say Minor Detained as Investigations Continue

Fitzroy Yearwood

While Orange Walk police say one minor is in custody, the family contends that at least two persons; one from Guinea Grass and one from August Pine Ridge have been detained by police since the incident. Late this evening, however, Belize City police granted an interview on the murder but their information is contrary to what we have learnt from Orange Walk.

Insp. Fitzroy Yearwood, Press Officer, B.P.D.

“Police responded to a report at August Pine Ridge where an elderly citizen of our country, ninety-year-old Pedro Pol was discovered by his son, a fifty-nine-year-old with his hands bounded, with injuries to his head and upper body.  He was transported to the Northern Regional Hospital where he later succumbed to those injuries.  He was discovered some time around 4:15 yesterday evening and succumbed to his injuries a little after five.  Initial investigation revealed that two Hispanic male persons entered his small shop in August Pine Ridge where it was an apparent robbery.  They tied him up and caused the fatal injuries to him.  We are seeking the assistance of the public with anything they believe could lead to the arrest of these culprits.”

“Now I understand that quick community work led to the apprehension of one of these individuals and secondly, we’re also understanding that the crime was committed by minors.  Can you confirm or expand?”

Insp. Fitzroy Yearwood

“Well, as far as investigators are going they are trying to confirm first if these persons are really the orchestrators of that crime and if so, I will still not be able to expound on that because of course we know the laws of Belize, especially when it comes to murder and any crime involving minors.  We just have to wait and see what the investigators come up with and then I can brief you.”
