City Youth Tells Story of Shooting on Jasmine Street

In the city, shots rang out on Thursday night. A young man was shot on Jasmine Street at around seven o’clock.  Wasani Avila was along with a friend when a gunman approached them and opened fire. His friend escaped, but unfortunately for him, a bullet caught him in the back. But was the shooting victim the intended target? Today, he recounted the ordeal to News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

A Belize City youth is lucky to have escaped with his life during a shooting incident on Jasmine Street on Thursday night.  The young man was socializing with a friend across the street from his home when an unknown assailant appeared on the scene.  He ordered the duo to stay put, but fearing for their lives, the two men scrambled for safety.  While his friend got away unscathed, a bullet ricocheted off the concrete fence hitting the other in the back.

Voice of: Wasani Avila, Shooting Victim

“Well actually ah noh really know weh gaan on and thing, but I noh know di young man dehn and thing like that.  We just mi di chill, tek wahn lee drink and I just sih bally pull up and tell we noh run and thing and I had to tek my run and thing.  If I neva tek my run and I noh know if I mi wah living right now.  And I just wahn ask di youths them fi hold down di lee crime cause da one one black man di drop and kill each other fi no use and thing.  Just respect each other.  If you got wahn beef with somebody, go fi yoh target, noh go fi somebody weh noh got nothing fi do with unu problem.  I just mi innocent and get hurt fi no reason.  I got respect fi everything weh gaan on, we noh got no problem with whosoever do it, but I just want di man dehn know [that] dehn got next other people out deh.  Just go fi who unu gwein fa and do weh unu got fi do with dehn people breds.  I noh know if da mi me or da mi my partner weh I mi di sihdown and tek wahn lee drink wid and me noh know weh he do out deh, but I noh got nothing fi do wid di lee problem.  Respect to the Belizean dehn and just mek we keep wih head up mein.”

“Now when you were told not to run, you made a break for it and shots were fired.  What happened, did the bullets ricocheted off the wall and you got hit as a result?  What actually happened there?”

Voice of: Wasani Avila

“Well actually I noh really know when I get hit.  All I assume da affa di wall because when I sih and when I drop pan di ground I realize that I get wahn shot afterwards, long after I realize that I get shot and fi what?  No reason.”

Isani Cayetano

“So were you rushed to the hospital at that point?  What happened, were you able to go to the hospital on your own?  What happened next?”

Voice of: Wasani Avila

“Afta dat I just get rushed to the hospital because all ah we wahn know weh gaan on wid di lee young bwai and thing, which is me.  And I know I noh deserve that but noh watch nothing, life da fi live.  But thank God ah deh ya again fi sih wahn next day.”
