Caleb asks Morality Commission, “What About Us?”

On Thursday, we brought you the response of the chair of the so-called “Morality Commission”, Deputy Prime Minister Patrick Faber, to the news that the Anglican and Methodist churches have withdrawn from their united position to respond to Government in the wake of the Section fifty-three decision from last August. Faber said Government remains interested in finding out how the churches are thinking.  But the prime mover behind the decision to decriminalize previously outlawed sexual activity including homosexuality, executive director of the United Belize Advocacy Movement, Caleb Orozco, says Government seems to have forgotten the real population most affected by the decision: the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and their friends and family. In an open letter, Orozco completely disdained the reasons given for the existence of the Commission. He writes that the Commission is, “the first sign that G.O.B.  was willing to throw its family members, everyday Belizeans and their LGBT citizens under the bus to save its cabinet from collapsing [and] a tool of further oppression as the government of Belize and the Deputy Prime Minister became complicit in legitimizing extremism in Belize. [This is] a first since our independence and a dangerous path that can affect the poor, women, older persons and any other who do not have access to political power.”  The activist says that it is not for the churches, particularly the Roman Catholics and Evangelicals to decide, referencing the billion-dollar child abuse scandal payouts for the former in particular.
