Split with Panama Angers Taiwan; Belize Will Not Be Next

Earlier this week, Panama severed diplomatic ties with Taiwan and announced it was forging relations with China. The move angered Taiwan, which later announced that it was closing its embassy and recalling its technical and diplomatic mission.  Today News Five caught up with Taiwan’s Ambassador to Belize we asked him about the rupture and whether or not there is any concern in respect to its relations with Belize.  Charles Liu said that while the ties ended abruptly with Panama, their relations with its twenty other allies remain strong and that he has every faith in the Belize’s relations with Taiwan.

Charles Liu, Taiwanese Ambassador to Belize

“For me, as Ambassador from Taiwan to Belize, I am really, really upset and really angry. As you know, Taiwan and Panama has had relations for more than one hundred years. Now, take example, is like a couple who have been married for so, long time. And all of a sudden one of the parties just say I am saying goodbye to you without reasons or because someone offered me some money and then say ‘bye bye’. I think it is not acceptable to everyone. So, I think Taiwan and Panama – right now it is difficult for the people. It is not the right thing to do – for the Panama Government to do it so suddenly and without any feeling or without any word to each other.”

“Is there any concern that other Central American countries will follow suit; and is the Government [Taiwanese] doing anything to keep Belize closer?”

Charles Liu

“As I mentioned, Belize and Taiwanese Government been having very close relations. And Belize Government understands Taiwan’s position. And Belize Government always keep Taiwan as a member of Belize, not only as friendship but I think we have a strong cooperation going now. So, I strongly believe that the Belize Government we can keep together and moving forward. I have no doubt that our strong relations we can keep on going.”

“So have you received instructions from the Taiwanese Government to keep Belize close? Have they spoken to you, Ambassador, about that situation – giving you instructions to keep Belize close as an ally?”

Charles Liu

“You know, keeping good relations is my ultimate; my most important job here. Not only since this thing between Taiwan and Panama. But I have been trying to do my best and our Taiwanese Government are doing our best to keep and maintain the good relationship not only for these reasons, since before, right now and in the future we will do our best to look Belize as our family member and I only hope that that the Belize Government also take Taiwan as its family member.”

I wonder what would happen if Taiwan finds out that there is ten thousand Chinese,( including young students working at stores accross the country), living happily and well employed here in Belize?
