Museum of Belize to Help Smaller Museums Associate

Alexis Salazar

The Museum of Belize is spearheading a project that will see small museums enter into an association. Next week the Museum of Belize is going to officially incorporate and sign the article of association that will see small museums better supported with training and other opportunities. When we spoke with Director of the Museum Alexis Salazar he explained what the benefits are of having this association.

Alexis Salazar, Director, Museum of Belize

“This group has been in operation for a little bit over a year now and this is just making them officially a group. It is part of the strategic objective of the Museum of Belize to support small museums and this is one of the ways that we are going about doing that by incorporating them and then we can provide further assistance once they are a formal group.”

Andrea Polanco

“What kind of assistance – and especially how do these smaller museums benefit from being under this umbrella organization – this association?”

Alexis Salazar

“The direct benefit is that we provide training. We just finished the training about a week ago on curation and how to handle artefacts in the event of a natural disaster; so how to conserve paper and so on. So, the benefit is that they will receive training on how to set up the museum and how to handle artefacts and all of these things as a formal group.”

Andrea Polanco

“What is the benefit particularly for the users of these museums, or how does it benefit Belize in terms of forming this association?”

Alexis Salazar

“Okay. The Museum of Belize is a statutory board under the NICH, but we can’t preserver everything so we rely on these other museums to preserve what they have in their private collections for the proliferation of culture. So, they are in turn helping us as the Government agency or the statutory board; so it is a mutually beneficial to both parties.”
