At Senate Inquiry, ASP Rochelle Chan Says ‘Possibilities’ Are Endless

Elena Smith

With an outright denial of the claims of whistleblower Alvarine Burgess two weeks ago, Police Assistant Superintendent Rochelle Chan appears to be putting the burden of proof on Burgess and the Senate Special Select Committee to investigate as if it is a court of law. Asked to consider whether it was even possible that Burgess was telling the truth, Chan tried to draw an analogy by suggesting that anyone, even his questioner Senator Elena Smith could be involved – a suggestion that the Senator was quick to shoot down.

Elena Smith, Senator, Trade Unions

“How is it possible, Mr. Chan? There has been all of this mention – I go back to that – all of this mention of your name and your involvement; is it possible that the cause of your relationship with Minister Penner, you are his brother in law, you said?”

“That is right.”

Elena Smith

“…that what Ms. Burgess mentioned here could be possible?”

Rochelle Chan

“I said what Ms. Burgess said to the Senate Select [Committee] is false, possibilities can go from here to there. It can be possible that maybe you were involved with Ms. Burgess, Ms. Smith, so to tell me or trying to throw a cast net upon me on my character shouldn’t be so. I feel like I am a victim of certain circumstances; I’m here, and I believe somewhere constitutionally my rights have been… what can I say, I leave it like that.”

Elena Smith

“Can we make it quite clear, Mr. Chan, there is a reason why you are where you are, and a reason why I am where I am… [Cross-talking] …and so do not associate me with Ms. Burgess in any way.”

Rochelle Chan

“You said my opinion and you’re putting it to me, Senator.”

Elena Smith

“I am asking the questions, you do not associate me with anybody, you are here under oath Mr. Chan, you swore under oath and you’re making it very difficult for us to believe what you are telling us today because you want to be casting aspersions on us, when you are the one in the hot seat, not me.”

Rochelle Chan

“You’re asking the question, I’m answering it.”
