One Questioned, One Detained as Police Close in on TTCU Robbers

One suspect is being questioned following the brazen robbery of the Toledo Teachers Credit Union late last week. The robbers concocted an elaborate plan to break into the building, pry open the vault containing over a hundred thousand dollars in cash, and then flee with the money undetected.  But even as the robbers carried out the heist with great detail, their images were captured by surveillance cameras inside the building which led police to one of them so far.  The cash, however, has not been recovered and police are looking for another suspect. News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

Over a hundred thousand dollars is missing from the Toledo Teachers Credit Union, following a burglary on Thursday night in Bella Vista Village.  Its branch office in that southern community was broken into by an intrepid pair of thieves who gained access to the building by breaching the main entrance.  The men then brought in heavy equipment to unhinge a solid steel door which gave way to a secure vault within the reinforced structure.  According to Superintendent Reymundo Reyes, Independence Police have detained one person in connection with the daring heist.

On the Phone: Supt. Reymundo Reyes, O.C., Intermediate Southern Formation

“The matter is being investigated here by the crimes investigation office.  At this moment we have one person in custody for which we are trying to do a comparison of fingerprints, since police have detected a lot of fingerprints inside the building.  So we are doing it for elimination purpose to see if this person was or was not inside that said building on the night of the burglary.”

While an individual remains in custody pending the outcome of a criminal investigation, the management of the lending institution is in the process of resuming its daily operations.  On one hand, the lenders are fortunate that the stolen monies are insured.

“We pay insurance for all of our equipment because they also went with a pump twelve and a nine millimeter that was [stored] in the vault.  They took all of that as well.  And all of those things are insured and the members should be aware that insurance covers our monies and so we should be able to get back to work by tomorrow or Wednesday, at least to provide the payout services.”

On the other hand, has the investigating team been successful in cracking the case through its interrogation of the suspect in detention?

On the Phone: Supt. Reymundo Reyes

“No.  Not at this moment.  He’s being spoken to as we speak by the investigators but we have not recovered any money from the burglary itself.”

For a credit union with almost nine thousand active members who access those funds on a regular basis, the loss is significant.  General Manager Leopoldo Romero allays the concerns of shareholders whose monies may have been tied up in the burglary.

Leopoldo Romero

“The members do not have to worry about not getting their money; we will provide the service as soon as we can put things back in order here.”

Isani Cayetano

“What is the size of the membership of this credit union?”

Leopoldo Romero

“We have eight thousand, five hundred active accounts.  We have about eleven thousand accounts, but we have some that are dormant or inactive.  But we have eight thousand, five hundred active accounts.”

Independence police are armed with evidence recovered from the scene of the theft.  With fingerprints lifted from several surfaces, as well as footage from surveillance cameras inside the building, are officers able to determine if the men they are looking for are perhaps residents of Bella Vista?

On the Phone: Supt. Reymundo Reyes

“Well that is what we don’t know.  We have faces but we have questioned several persons who would be able to assist us in the identification of persons, but up to this moment to no avail.”
