…But Attorney and Political Figure Will Not Give Up Law Practice

Lisa Shoman

So, with a cushy number waiting for Shoman at Thirteen Hundred New York Avenue, will her law office here in Belize City be shuttered?  That’s what we asked her earlier today.

Isani Cayetano

“What does that mean for your private practice?  Do you now have to give up the office here?”

Lisa Shoman, IDB Judge

“No.  It’s not expected that I will give up private practice.  I mean, I’ve been scaling back practice to only a few clients in any case.  But no, it doesn’t mean that I give up practice or litigation in Belize and if there were any issues having to deal with a staff member of the IDB in Belize, I wouldn’t in any case be involved.  There are seven judges on the panel, on the entire panel and it’s rare that all seven seated, it would have to be an exceptional case.  So judges normally work in panels of three and the president of the arbitral tribunal decides who sits on what cases.  So it will be in sessions in DC and also working by email, by media, so that we are able to get things like discovery of documents and so on.”

Isani Cayetano

“How significant is this achievement, this appointment for you as a Belizean, being able to sit on this bench, if I may?”

Lisa Shoman

“No it’s huge.  For me, I’ve always been interested in sitting on the bench and this is the first time that I actually get an opportunity to act as an adjudicator on an arbitral tribunal of this sort.  I’ve been a sole arbitrator before and I’ve always enjoyed the experience.”

Lisa Shoman is a former foreign minister, as well as an Ambassador to the Organization of American States and has been active in gender issues, as well as politics for decades.
