Family Raises Alarm after Multiple Houses Built on Pen Road Property

We report on land disputes regularly in this newscast, but this one has a different twist. The de facto caretaker of Queen Square division and sister to Prime Minister and area representative Dean Barrow, Denise “Sista B” Barrow, established three houses standing side by side at the eastern end of parcel 444 located at number five Neal Pen Road, the property of the late Eric Thompson of Chicago, Illinois. On Monday, construction began on a fourth house in the middle of the property, and others are expected to join it. But the problem is that while Barrow filled in and surveyed the property, it is not actually hers; it belongs to the Usher family, whose original family house still stands at the other end of the property. The Ushers alleged that Barrow was to compensate the family with another house and help to change the land documents to the name of the family administrator in addition to filling in the land. But the Ushers contend they did not give her permission to start building right away. We visited the area and spoke to property owner Irene Usher.

Irene Usher, Property Owner

“It was kind of surprising to me and I was shocked when my daughter called me and said, Mom, they’re taking away my land – take away your land? How can they take away your land? This is your family land – you can’t just let somebody walk in and take your family’s land like that – come on! Does she have papers or the authority to do it? No, so what’s going on?”

Reporter

“When you say authority, you’re talking about Ms. Barrow’s authority?”

Irene Usher

“Yes, I am speaking about Ms. Barrow. To me this is unjust; how can you just come and build on somebody’s land like that? Don’t they have a procedure that you need to go through?”

Reporter

“Now in terms of who actually manages and presides over the land, because Mr. Thompson is deceased and it hasn’t been changed to anybody else’s name.”

Irene Usher

“When my daughter moved here in June, this land was in high, high bush – you could get your dog and come and hunt in here. But my daughter gradually started to clean it down, clean it down, trying to get it back to where it used to be.”

Reporter

“All this filling and so on is her initiative?”

Irene Usher

“This is done by Sista B; apparently she wants piece of the land so she filled it up because she needs to put a house on it; as you can see, the house is going up.”

Usher’s daughter did not wish to appear on camera but she told us that she has had a hard time dealing with the tenants already on the property. She says there are no monies outstanding for land tax or property tax on the property. She is presently seeking legal advice.
