Save Lives, Give Blood!

June fourteenth is celebrated annually as World Blood Donor Day. As early as eight o’clock, persons are encouraged to visit the National Blood Bank office inside the Central Region Compound on Princess Margaret Drive to donate a unit of blood. This year, the day is being celebrated under the theme, “What can you do? Give Blood, Give Now, Give Often.” Today, News Five spoke with Phlebotomist, Nurse Doreen Madrill, who says that donating blood saves lives.

“We are not having an AGM this year, but I’m inviting all the voluntary donors to pass by the blood bank and receive a little token tomorrow.”

“Talk to us about the importance of this.”

“Well the importance of giving blood; you are saving three lives. When you donate one unit of blood, you have three parts that can be given to three different persons: the blood cells, the plasma and platelets. So when you are donating a unit of blood, you are not only saving one person, you are saving three lives. So far, we are not having them in abundant but we are having a few, we are getting more. In terms of voluntary because when we go out and do the blood drives, that’s where we get the most voluntary donors. The rare type of blood that is always in need and is very scarce is all negatives. I’m encouraging all negative people to come out and donate a unit of blood voluntary so that whenever a voluntary donor needs a unit of blood you don’t have to look all over the place.”
