Orlando Vera Challenges Conviction, Seeks Bail

He faces two years in prison, but senior forensic ballistic examiner Orlando Vera, convicted for abetment to pervert the course of justice, is fighting his conviction and sentence.  Today, he applied for bail pending the hearing of his inferior appeal to the Supreme Court. Defense attorney Anthony Sylvestre argued that his client did not need to be remanded by Chief Magistrate Ann-Marie Smith while waiting for the ruling and that a fine was in order since the actual offence for which he is accused of committing was not carried out. Director of Public Prosecutions Cheryl-Lynn Vidal countered that the offense is considered very serious. However, Justice Herbert Lord delayed a ruling to June thirteenth as he peruses the documents he received just today. Sylvestre is appealing the severity of the sentence and error in law. Director Vidal proposed to quickly dispose of the appeal within a month but that it was not necessary to grant bail before then.
