Trio in Tanya Carter Robbery Spared Jail

A trio of teenagers were handed suspended prison sentences for their roles in the robbery of entertainer Tanya Carter more than a week ago. Magistrate Carlon Mendoza sentenced nineteen year old Darwin Monroy to one year in prison, suspended. He has been further ordered to enroll and complete the Apprenticeship Program, attend counseling with the Community Rehabilitation Program and do fifty hours of community service under the supervision of the Magistrate’s Court beginning on Monday.  As for the minors aged sixteen and seventeen who were involved, the sixteen-year-old’s prison sentence was suspended for two years and the seventeen year old for one. The sixteen year old must continue in his high school classes, where he is in second form; attend the Community Rehabilitation Department weekly and meet with an officer there, complete fifty hours community service in the summer break and enroll in the Apprenticeship Program. Meanwhile, the seventeen-year-old, who is a high school dropout, is enjoined to keep the peace for the length of his suspended sentence, enroll in school or become employed through the Youth Apprenticeship Program; observe a curfew between six p.m. and six a.m. and enroll and participate in sessions at the CRD and sign in weekly during his sentence. It may all seem a slap on the wrist, but in depth recommendations from personnel of the Social Services and Community Rehabilitation Departments were followed by the Magistrate in imposing the decision. If any of the conditions are not followed, the youths go to jail for six months.
