Security Guard Shot, Left Critical for Firearm

John Hoare

A security officer remains hospitalized tonight after an attempt on his life on Thursday night. John Hoare is employed by Technical Security System from Cayo but was on duty in Belize City when he was shot. Two men approached Hoare but instead of going after the equipment he was guarding, they went after his firearm before shooting him and fleeing.  News Five’s Duane Moody files the following report.

Duane Moody, Reporting

Just before nine o’clock on Thursday night, shots rang out in the Saint Martin De Porres area of south side Belize City. Fifty-year old John Hoare, a security of Simon Lamb Street, was shot to the chest while on duty. He was rushed to the K.H.M.H. in a critical, but stable condition and is now recovering in the ward.

Sgt. Roberto Novelo, O.C., C.I.B., Precinct 2, Belize City Police

“Around nine p.m. last night police visited a yard located on Police Street where they saw a male persons by the name of Mister John Hoare. He is fifty years [old]; he is a security guard for technical security system. He was suffering from gunshot to the left upper side of the chest. He was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where he is a critical condition at this time.”

Hoare has been working with Technical Security System from Cayo as the assistant security supervisor and security guard for the Belize City branch. He stood watch of Princess Casino slot machines at the property on Police Street, when he was targeted by robbers, who came not for the equipment, but for the service weapon he carried. The shooter and his accomplice escaped with the nine millimeter pistol.

“The investigation reveals so far that Mister Hoare was guarding some slot machines at a yard on Police Street. At that time, he was approached by two dark complexion male persons, one armed with a firearm who fired a shot at him and thereafter stole a nine millimeter pistol from him, the property of the security company.”

“So robbery was the motive of this crime?”

Sgt. Roberto Novelo

“Certainly robbery was the motive.”

Duane Moody

“For the gun…”

Sgt. Roberto Novelo

“That’s right.”

Evidence shows that several shots were fired at Hoare, but only a single point forty-five bullet caught him in the chest. But was the same gun used in the commission of the murder of Jerson Carballo?

Sgt. Roberto Novelo

“He was only hit once on the chest. We found three point forty-five expended shells at the scene.”

Duane Moody

“Now sir, interestingly, I believe the last murder that occurred earlier this week in that area, it was also a point forty-five [gun] that was used in that crime. I know it is still initial, but have you guys been able to ascertain whether it is the same firearm that was used in this?”

Sgt. Roberto Novelo

“No, we have not ascertained if it is the same firearm, however, we believe that it is a possibility that it could be the same firearm.”
