Watch Out for Manatees in Placencia Lagoon

Norwegian Cruise Line’s Harvest Caye destination in the South has drummed up big business for the company and to a lesser extent for Belizean vendors. But the increased traffic in the Placencia Lagoon, says the Southern Environmental Association, is to blame for four manatee deaths in 2017, the latest reported on Tuesday evening. S.E.A. reports that the female manatee, found drifting in the lagoon near Malacate Beach, had suffered three fatal wounds across its back from a propeller on a catamaran identified as the Lady Lisa. The catamaran’s workers towed the animal to the Harvest Caye marina and S.E.A. conducted further examination elsewhere. S.E.A. asks all captains to boat safely inside the Lagoon, as the waterway is a natural haven for the endangered species.
