The Olympic Day Fun Run Takes Over Downtown

On Sunday, the annual Olympic Day Run takes place in downtown Belize City; the event is organized by National Olympic Committee and executed by the Belize Athletics Association. It started back in 1948 and Belize is one of nine countries that decided to adapt the event to keep the Olympic spirit. The idea is to get persons, including athletes from the various member associations to come out and participate in the run. Deon Sutherland explains.

“In Belize, we decided to do a run annually. This run has five categories. We have the infants which has two categories. The under-nine will run from Brodies Regent Street, around Mule Park up Albert Street; they will turn at Dean Street and come back to Regent Street, Brodies. The infants, ten to thirteen, they will run up Regent Street to Mule Park, turn Albert Street go all the way down to Equity Building and then they will come back up Regent Street. And you have the juniors, which is fourteen to nineteen; they will do two laps. Down Regent Street around the Mule Park, Albert Street; they will do all the way down to Cemetery Lane and then they will turn back down to Regent Street…two laps. And then you have the open and the masters. They will do two laps. They will go down Regent Street, Mule Park, Albert Street…all the way pass the burial ground, turn in front of Wesley and then come all the way back down Regent Street. It’s important for us because we want all disciplines. All registered federations in Belize to be a part of the Olympic movement, to come in solidarity with the Belize Olympic Committee. As you know the Olympic Committee assists all national federations that are registered with them. So this is being a part of the Olympic Committee as a federation giving back.”

Registration begins at six a.m. on Sunday.
