Acita Flores

Two persons drown over the weekend in separate incidents in the north and west of the country. Just after nine on Sunday morning, the decomposing body forty-four-year-old Acita Flores was discovered floating about half a mile north of Consejo Village in the Corozal District. The Sarteneja villager was among eight other persons from the village who had chartered a skiff to take them to Calderitas and Chetumal in Quintana Roo, Mexico to do some shopping. But tragedy struck on the return; as the twenty-two-foot boat departed Mexico en route to Sarteneja, it was hit by a huge wave just outside Consejo and capsized. All were saved except Flores, who was initially floating on a sack of corn before disappearing under water. Since Friday, villagers in private vessels traversed the Caribbean Sea in search of Flores. Her body, which was in an advance state of decomposition, was transported to the Corozal Town Hospital on Sunday and a post mortem examination certified that she drowned. All other passengers were taken to the hospital where they were treated and released; except for the captain, who remains hospitalized.
