From Murder to Manslaughter – Fourteen More Years in Jail for Osmar Sabido Jr.

Osmar Sabido Jr.

Twenty-one years for manslaughter….that’s the sentence handed down today by the Court of Appeal to Osmar Sabido Junior. He was convicted in April 2016 of the murder of his common-law wife, Christie Carrasco of Orange Walk.  The stabbing incident occurred at the couple’s home where he stabbed her more than once on February twenty-eight 2011. Sabido was sentenced to life, but on appeal in March of this year, that conviction was squashed and was replaced with a verdict of manslaughter.   Today, after a one-hour mitigation plea at his sentencing, Sabido Junior learnt that he is sentenced to twenty-one years for manslaughter, of which effective today, he will serve fourteen years and three hundred and forty-seven days more behind bars since he has spent six years and eighteen days in prison since the murder conviction.  In mitigation, Sabido Junior was very emotional and expressed remorse saying he never meant to do what he did and that he is a good man. His father, who was dissatisfied with the outcome, made attempts to attack the family of Carrasco rather than mitigate, which was noted by the President of the Appellate Court, Manuel Sosa.  He however, along with his uncle, Mateo Yama spoke glowingly of Sabido Junior. The case has drawn attention because Sabido Junior claimed he was provoked by Carrasco after she uttered hurtful words to him. He also denied stabbing her, claiming she accidentally stabbed herself with a knife. The other judges of the Court of Appeal are Christopher Blackman and Madam Minette Hafiz Beltram.
