P.M. Says Spare “Yellow Man”

Brian "Yellow Man" Audinett

The conduct of Yellow Man during the May seventeenth meeting of the Senate Special Select Committee has been widely condemned, following verbal threats he made to members of the media at that hearing.  His fate as sergeant at arms of the House of Representatives now hangs in the balance, pending a decision by the National Assembly Staff Committee which meets on June ninth.  Prime Minister Barrow, who is also party leader of the U.D.P., has been fairly quiet on the matter until he was quizzed this morning for a position on the embarrassing episode.  The PM says that while he supports the initiative by Belizeans Against Courtenay, he rebukes the behavior of Yellow Man, but not to the point of firing him as macebearer.

“The issue involving the embarrassing incident inside the senate hearing a few weeks ago, it would seem as though aside from the chairman issuing his apology the party has been fairly quiet in response to that that transpired in the house.  Can you share with us your position on the Yellow Man incident and what can be done going forward?”

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“Well, I think that Yellow Man’s behavior is absolutely regrettable.  What the chairman of the party wished to do, attempted to do, shine a light on Eamon Courtenay and the P.U.P. and their hypocrisy and political dishonesty was well done.  But Yellow Man’s behavior, in terms of the media, cannot be countenanced and so I certainly deplore it out of hand.  Again though, as I understand it, he’s sent a letter of apology to the Speaker.  I think it would be good if he also sent a letter of apology to the media, in particular to you madam, and whoever else it is alleged that he was perhaps threatening in his attitude towards.  And thereafter, it is as the Speaker has now said, a matter for the National Assembly Staff Committee.  But you can’t countenance that sort of thing.  As I said, it really is extremely regrettable and it must not happen again and I think Yellow Man is as much aware of that as anybody else. If I were a member of that staff committee, while I would insist that some kind of punishment be administered, I certainly would not send him home.  Look, Ms. Amaya and the other person were relatively magnanimous.  As I understand it, they made a report to the police in order to record officially the fact of what happened but asked that no action be taken.  So this man has not been charged with anything.”
