A New National Sports Council Director

Ian Jones

A new Director of the National Sports Council has been named to the post.  That office has been vacant for months, following the departure of Ritchel Dominguez, whose contract was not renewed when it expired in January of this year. In the interim months, Charlie Slusher acted in that capacity, but the Ministry of Sports has now moved to hire Ian Jones. Jones has extensive experience in the field, especially in football. He is a former president of the Verdes Football Club and has also managed F.C. Belize and served on the management of B.D.F. Football Club.  Jones also sat on the Marketing Committee for the Football Federation of Belize, as well as committees for the Premier League of Belize. His appointment took effect this past Monday. As for his credentials, Jones is pursuing post-graduate studies in Sports Management from the University of the West Indies. Earlier this week, Sports Minister Patrick Faber was asked about the appointment.

“We did have a process to select the new director and Mister Jones came out on top. Mister Slusher, I will tell you, held over very well in the interim as acting director and in fact, Mister Slusher was one of the applicants for the post of director. And while Mister Slusher was not successful, I will tell you that he will be promoted to make sure that he is the number two person there are the Sports Council. I believe that the work that he demonstrated in the interim proved that he is capable of a leadership role in the National Sports Council and he has agreed to take on that position as a kind of deputy director to Mister Jones and so we are moving forward in the national sports council.”
