Couple Charged with Handling Stolen Goods of British Soldier

Sonia Bainton

Two Ladyville residents find themselves in trouble with the law for an I-phone-six cell phone valued at one thousand two hundred dollars which ended up in their possession. Sonia Bainton and Edward McKay have both been charged for the incident. Bainton appeared on Monday before Senior Magistrate Sharon Fraser for handling stolen goods in respect of the Iphone and for damage to a cement column.  Allegations are that on April twenty-second, 2017, while at the Ladyville Police Station, Bainton unlawfully caused damages to the column. Further allegations are that along with McKay, she dishonestly assisted in the retention of the I-phone belonging to Neil McClenaghan, a British Soldier, who resides at the Price Barracks Compound in Ladyville.  For damaging the cement column, she was fined a total of eight hundred dollars and as it relates to the charge of handling stolen goods, for which Bainton pleaded not guilty, this case was adjourned for June fifteenth, 2017.  She was offered bail in the sum of one thousand five hundred dollars which she met and was released from custody.

Edward McKay

In the case of McKay, he was charged with two counts of handling stolen goods. Aside from the I-Phone, the construction worker was also charged with a second count of handling stolen goods for a watch belonging to McClenaghan.  McKay pleaded not guilty to the two charges and was denied bail due to a list of previous offences pending before the court, all for crimes of dishonesties. He has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison until June nineteenth, 2017.
