Boy drowns in a vat in San Pedro

Zaeem Vicente Torres

Six-year-old Zaeem Vicente Torres, a resident of San Pedro Town, lost his life over the Easter weekend in a most bizarre incident. The infant was at a restaurant along with his parents around nine o’clock on Holy Thursday when he disappeared from their view. While he had been playing with other kids in the vicinity, he somehow slipped out of their sight. When they realized that the child was missing, a search party was deployed into an area of the island near the lagoon. Despite several attempts to locate Zaeem, they were unsuccessful.  It wasn’t until moments later, sometime between nine-thirty and ten o’clock p.m. that the child was discovered motionless inside a large Rotoplas tank. All efforts to revive the minor were fruitless. This evening we spoke with Zaeem’s uncle via phone from San Pedro. He shared details of the tragic drowning.

On the phone: Andre Perez, Uncle of Deceased

“It all happened in ten or 15 minutes tops. I happened at a restaurant that is on the dock on the lagoon side of San Pedro and just about two hundred yards ahead there were four Rotoplast reservoirs that contained water and unfortunately one of those the cover was off and there was a stool next to it and it is evident that the people checking it left it there and it was a sad incident. I wouldn’t say negligence or anything; it was just an unfortunate incident. An accident and the parents after a long days work because they have a water company and they were up working the Holy Thursday as usual with the customers for them here in San Pedro, the Thursday is a busy day for them. They had been making there deliveries and they have a purifying plant and the restaurant happens to be just up the street maybe 1 block away or maybe five houses away. My brother-in-law as at the restaurant ordering food and sitting down, resting after a long days work and then my sister and Zaem they went to eat some food and while they were sitting there, the place was safe there was no vehicle so it is safe for the kids to run around close by. The kids where playing out there and they were running up to my brother-in-law and eating bites of food; you know how kids are they run in bite something and run out playing and in a couple of minutes or so something happened and they went looking for him and he was nowhere to be found. So everybody joined in the search and I think my sister ran to the house to check whether he had gone home because he is six and the street is safe for him to run home. So she ran there to check if he had went back home and other people started searching along the dock, some other people went on a boat and on a jet ski with flashlight and someone went to check the vat that was open and the first time they checked they didn’t see anything and I think they did a second and a third time. And on the third time they realized that he was floating to the side f the Rotoplast. He was pulled out, I do understand that there was a doctor there who happens to be a friend of the family as well. He is the one that found him and he pulled him out and immediately started to administer CPR on him and this was done a couple of minutes while they got a golf cart to take him to the clinic. On the way I understand that they did CPR as well and this happened around nine-thirty to ten and he was rushed to the clinic and when I was called I rushed to the clinic as well and when I reached the doctors came out and they called my sister and my brother-in-law to give them the news and that was where it was confirmed that they had lost him.”
