Girl, 9, fights for life after nearly drowning in Corozal

Drowning is a common concern in the Easter Holidays as Belizeans travel to sources of water for relaxation. The family of nine-year-old Samaria Azencio Murcia waits by her bedside at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital tonight as she continues to fight for her life. Following a near-drowning at the Miami Beach in Corozal on Good Friday she is hospitalized in critical but stable condition. Sometime after two that afternoon, police received a call about a drowning at Miami Beach and responded, finding two persons doing C.P.R. on a child later identified as Azencio. She was transported to Corozal Hospital by police with the persons still performing C.P.R.; on arrival at the hospital, she was responding. She was later transferred to the K.H.M.H. Police did not give details of what happened to Azencio in the water and their investigations continue.
