Chester Williams Says Truce is Possible; Can Successor Vidal Hold It Together?
As we mentioned, ED-South Commander Chester Williams has played a critical role in bringing the gangs together and negotiating a truce. While the noble attempt is nothing we haven’t seen before, the initiative must be attributed to the respective leaders. According to ACP Williams, the idea was borne out of a mediation held earlier this week.
ACP Chester Williams, Commander, Eastern Division South
“From an intervention we had these guys agree that they want to have a peace walk whereby they can all come together and show some sign that they do want the madness in the streets to stop, particularly the shootings, that you know, have been plaguing everybody in Belize City. It is of great concern to us as law enforcement and also to them as members of the community, as well as the business sector and everyone who are stakeholders in this in Belize City. Many things that we are doing are things that have been done before and they are good initiatives, the BLACK march is a good initiative as well. But what we like about this one is that the participants are only those persons who are affected by the different shootings in the city and it was their idea. They decided that they’ll have it. And again, we have representation from every block in Belize City, including those from north side.”
“In speaking with some of these individuals who are out here today, there seems to be an overwhelming request, I should say, for you to remain as the commander of the south side in order to preserve the existing status quo. What is your thought on that?”
ACP Chester Williams
“I am a police officer, I am subject to be transferred and the commissioner is the commissioner and he decides where he puts his senior officers and if he thinks that I am best suited to serve in Belmopan in the capacity that I am going then I go with the commissioner’s decision that it is time for me to move on and do something different. So while they may have that belief or they may want that, at the end of the day it is what the commissioner believes is best for him at the time to be able to effective.”
“But you have been instrumental in laying the groundwork for all of this. Your departure and someone else taking over would mean that these people are naturally apprehensive that things are going to fall apart.”
ACP Chester Williams
“Well I don’t think so. I know Mr. Vidal, he’s a friend of mine and Vidal is an outstanding officer. I am sure that when he comes he will assess the situation on the ground and he’s no fool. He knows what he will need to do from what he is not required to do and he will ensure that he continues the good work that we have started on south side.”
