More Cops Charged for Contraband in Corozal; This Time Customs is Behind the Camera
On Friday, police made a belated announcement of disciplinary proceedings against a police constable and a special constable based in Orange Walk, who were accused of illegally contrabanding items at the Rio Hondo/Botes crossing. Police Constable Jorge Ascurio of the Orange Walk Formation was charged for acting in prejudice to good order and discipline and placed on interdiction. Alfredo Ismael Gongora was suspended from the Special Constable Program. Today, two more contrabandista cops have been put on interdiction. Like their fellow officers, they were caught on video with alleged contraband, but this time it was by Customs officers based at the Northern Border Station. According to police in Corozal, Customs officers filmed a police vehicle with Police Constable Elston Rojas and the vehicle commander, Police Corporal Abner Marroquin. The men, who were transporting a black bag in the pan of the pickup, refused to stop at the checkpoint and were pursued. The duo managed to evade the Customs men down a feeder road. But the pursuers recovered the bag, containing assorted slippers, socks and underwear, and transported to the Corozal Police Station. An investigation was immediately ordered by Commissioner Allen Whylie and PC Rojas and Corporal Marroquin were charged with Prejudice to Good Order and Discipline and placed on interdiction.
