James Adderley highlights weekend sports

Story Picture
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and you’re hooked into this latest delivery of Sports Monday. The Belize City football fans finally got a close up look at the newcomer upstart Jacintoville United of P.G. as Regent’s Cup play brought them to the M.C.C. Grounds yesterday against Kulture Yabra.

With only two rounds remaining on the regular season on schedule, the city team comes out definitely in search of the three points as Deon Frazier misses the first Yabra scoring opportunity.

Minutes later Edmund Thomas should put Yabra on the scoreboard, but his control needs a little more precision work. For certain, the intensity of the Yabra team is not matched by their attempts at goal, as Christopher Villanueva demonstrates.

Meanwhile, it might look funny when Deon Frazier gets this ball into the danger zone and Nunez and Thomas get in each other’s way, but it’s no laughing matter. Okay, since there are many ways to skin a cat Yabra goes to the set piece, and while Tilliman’s offering looks good, it sure ain’t goal. Looking to turn the tide, the visitors go to the long distance missile, but the ball inches over the crossbar.

Now keep your eyes on Thomas as he penetrates the eighteen. He gets taken down from behind and the referee rules penalty. This time it’s not Vallan Symms, who gets the call-instead it’s Norman “Tilliman” Nunez-and he makes it look too easy. Yabra takes a 1-zip lead some thirty-four minutes in.

With new momentum, the city team continues to press and Tilliman does everything right except beat the keeper this time. At the other end, Jacintoville gets lucky and Arden Garay himself in a one on one situation with Shane Moody–and can you comprehend this lack of finish.

At this juncture, we’ve got to say that goleador Kenton Galvez’s debut in Belize City was less than spectacular when he came out in second half, and this is his only shot of the ballgame. I guess the microwave hadn’t heated up yet.

Nevertheless, the visitors almost tie the ballgame with this right foot bomb from Dennis Alvarez, but Moody is well positioned in goal.

However, it’s bye-bye for Jacintoville when Deon Frazier finds Norman “Tilliman” Nunez, who scores his second of the match to give Yabra a 2-zip big W.

In other results from around the league, Sagitun and San Pedro Seahawks struggled to a 2-2 stalemate. Juventus jerked Belmopan in a 3-zip blast and Griga United hurt Real Verdes 3-zip.

As far as we can see, Juventus, Kulture Yabra, Sagitun and Builders Hardware Bandits all are already qualified for the four-team playoffs. Why? Mathematics does not tell lies.

Turning to the softball scene, the Sir Andie Trophy Tournament was staged at Roger’s Stadium over the weekend. We pick up the action as Team C.T.C. of Belize City battles Independence United to get into the finals against undefeated B.T.L., waiting in the wings. Shirlene Banner rallies her team to a 6-3 big W over Leona Linares and C.T.C. steps up. Unfortunately, the rains come before C.T.C. and B.T.L. had completed three innings, which forces a re-start on Thursday at Roger’s Stadium. C.T.C. can be eliminated by one B.T.L. win, since it’s a double elimination format. And B.T.L. has not lost so far in this tournament.

Meanwhile, the Lady Rebels raffle last week in the C.L.B. Rogers Memorial Tournament saw Mrs. Alane Westby drive away with a 1993 Ford Mercury after investing only thirty dollars. We say congratulation to Mrs. Westby, and also to Leslie Rogers and the Lady Rebels on their creative fundraising initiative.

Finally folks, when you’re hot you’re hot, and we must say Hubert Johnson is simply sizzling. After winning Belize’s Lionman event, some two weeks ago, Johnson crossed over to Bacalar, Mexico over the weekend and walked away with their Sprint Triathlon that features three hundred metres of swimming, ten miles of biking and three miles of running. His time was fifty-three minutes, forty-seven seconds and we say folks, Hubert Johnson, a true Belizean, is one of a kind. When you’re big you’re large.

That’s it for now. We thank our cameramen for their great work over the weekend. Jah over all! I’m James Adderley.
